Template was made of 1 1/2" plastic electrical pipe & some pvc plumbing pipe. The electric pipe had a nice pre-made elbow that you see in the pic. I took measurements off the boat & laid it out on the basement floor. I measured the approx height and angle off the boat. Had to have a starting point. My goal was to have it end up the same height as the bimini and stick off the transom far enough so that I would not hit my head going down to the swim platform. I also knew that the top bars had to be smaller than the distance between the feet to look good on the skinny transom of the M43. Cut till I was happy & fastened every joint with a sheetrock screw.

Then I brought the complete contraption down to the boat. Temporally screwed the base wood to the toe rail and held the arch up with a line off the back stay. Re-cut and refit till I was happy with the look.

I trip out in the dinghy to get the real feel of how it looked. First try had not enough angle. Dropped the angle and know it was too low. Added extensions to the plastic to get the height and the above pics show what it looked like when I had the welder visit the boat.
The pic with the swim noodle is my attempt to see if we could incorporate the rear seats into the arch. Did not plan seats in the beginning.

The welder came to the boat & agreed that seats would be nice and he convinced me to go forward with a solid rail to the first stanchion. Is only boat money!!
The above three pics are the unit being made at the welders shop. No I did not do that part!

The long awaited day of installation. First pic is the boat stripped ready for the arch. Four hours of drilling and fastening as the sun set, it was installed. Got a few pics that day before dark.
Oct 21st and getting cold.

Well, here we are on our one any only sail using the new arch. Michele is trying out the seat (not built yet), she is sitting on a hatch board from below.

Then the trip up river to haul her out. Sad time of year. Have not perfected the dinghy hoist yet but you get the idea.
Notice the seats have been made and installed. I  made them from 1/2" Starboard.

Now that I am hauled for the winter, I will run the rear light, GPS antenna & deck light wire in the arch tube so I can finish up in the spring.

So should I sell the rear OLD rails? I think they might just be able to be used as bars around the mast!!!!!
The question at this point is how many holes do I dare put through the cabin top!?

Happy Sailing!
Al and Michele Watson
